CFP BOARD FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Receiving notice from the CFP Board can be stressful and confusing. Below are answers to common questions CFP professional ask when facing a complaint, investigation, or disciplinary proceeding. 

What happens after CFP Board files a complaint against me?

  1. After CFP Board files a complaint, Enforcement Counsel begins an investigation.

  2. CFP Board may request documents, written explanations, and other information to understand the circumstances of the alleged conduct.

  3. If the matter proceeds, the case may be brought before the Disciplinary and Ethics Commission (DEC), which will hold a hearing and determine whether a violation occurred and whether a sanction should be imposed.

Do I have to respond to CFP Board?

  1. Yes. CFP Board typically requires a written response and supporting documentation during the investigation stage. Failing to respond or cooperate with CFP Board can lead to an additional disciplinary action.

Who is Enforcement Counsel?

  1. Enforcement Counsel are attorneys for CFP Board who investigate complaints and present cases involving alleged violations of CFP Board’s Code of Ethics and Standards of Conduct.
